ABOUT
WHO’S THE LIGHT RUNNER?
There’s a Light Runner in all of us. Everyone faces challenges in life, and everyone wants to be happy… the trick is combining the two!
By sharing my passions for running, photography and personal development, I aim to raise money and awareness for mental health. Through your support and ideas, I’m taking on a range of challenges in order to spread a unique type of joy around the world.
I’m taking on the mantle of “The Light Runner”, but I’m also known as Andy and you can find out more about me here.
WHY I’M DOING IT
To improve Mental Health throughout the world. Its something that all of us deal with, either directly through personal struggles, or through friends, family and the wider community. Its also an area that unfortunately has old stigmas working against it, and I think its time we changed that.
For a long time I’ve been wanting to give back more. I figure I can give my time and share my skills and passions in a way that can be entertaining and inspiring. By doing this, and if you help by sharing it, we can create much greater awareness, leading to larger sponsorships, more donations and therefore, more positive change throughout the world.
WHAT I’M DOING
Running around Europe, taking on various challenges and creating videos, with nothing but a running pack.
HOW I’M DOING IT
In many ways, this is easier to answer…
How the journey unfolds
The plan is this… to not have a plan. I know that when I travel I have more fun when it spontaneous, and when I’m not too tied down to plans. Also, being on a tight budget, it means I can go with the wind and catch a cheap flight or hitch a lift when available. You can see the plans I do have (as well as what I’ve done), in the map below.
There’s so much to see and do in Europe, new opportunities will always arise. I’m keen for you to come on the journey with me, so feel free to tell me where to go, what to do and who to meet!
How my time is used
My biggest challenge is juggling everything at once, while travelling “light” and moving around Europe at a fast pace. This is how my time is usually spent:
- In the day: Running, doing challenges– taking photos and videos
- Evening: night photos, messages from requests and other ideas
- Travelling- editing/uploading photos and videos
- Rest- shower/laundry, recharge batteries and sleep
What I’ve got with me
For those interested in the gear I’ve got with me, there’s a video on youtube that explains each item and the many reasons it has been chosen. Most of the weight/bulk revolves around producing the best possible images, video and audio. In a nutshell, this is all I’ve got:
- Running pack
- Camera, 1 lens, tripod, microphone, 5 x lights, filters etc
- Exercise bands
- Smart watch, phone, tablet, battery power banks
- 2 changes of clothes, rainjacket and a chamois
- Water bottle, toothbrush and deodorant
“Rules” I’ve set myself
Lifes often better when you give yourself some parameters, here are some I’m sticking to:
- No hotels/accommodation- if I can’t find someone to stay with, I’m out on the street for the night
- Going the distance by putting health first, slow and steady wins the long race
- Uploading videos daily
- Chatting to anyone and everyone
WHEN DOES IT END?
This year’s Europe trip will end on World Mental Health Day, 10/10/15. However, this is only the beginning for The Light Runner. Videos will continue to be released regularly (monthly) until the next big adventure. So stay tuned!
